Description

Sackcloth and Ashes: Tip Girls Leaving Work. Engraving of the painting held at Cyfartha Castle.

Tip girls helped to clear the drams of burning cinders from the furnaces; this work was carried out in all weathers. Other women and girls broke up limestone for the furnaces and carried loads, both at the works and in the mines. The work was demanding and carried out in 12 hour shifts.
