Description
Types of PoppiesThe Corn Poppy is part of Papaveraceae, the poppy family. This family includes about 70 species of Papaver. The poppy family also includes Meconopsis. Papaver and Meconopsis are the two genera in the poppy family most often seen in the UK.The red poppies seen in Wales are not all Corn Poppies. There are, in fact, four species of red poppy in Wales. The Corn Poppy is the most common, but can be distinguished from the rarer Long-headed Poppy, Rough Poppy and Prickly Poppy by its rounded, flat-topped and hairless seed capsules. The Welsh Poppy (Meconopsis cambrica) is native to Wales, but it also grows in parts of Ireland, England, France and Spain. Cambrica means 'connected with Wales' in Latin.
