Poppy Revival

Description

Since the late 1980s farmers have been given financial incentives by governments to encourage biodiversity. These are known as agri-environment schemes and here in Wales they are called Glastir. Farmers are encouraged to allow broad-leaved plants to grow at the edges of fields. This helps plants like the poppy to establish, boosts insect numbers and provides cover for birds.PlantLife, a British plant conservation charity, launched a Common Plant Survey in 2004 and asked people to record sightings of 'everyday' plants. They found that 120 species of wild flowers depend on crop growing and together make up the most threatened group of plants in Wales. One element of the PlantLife survey was a specific Poppy Survey. People were asked to spot poppies found on farm land in the UK. The results showed that the Corn Poppy is now growing in habitats such as roadsides and waste-ground to survive. The Longheaded Poppy also appears to be more widespread now because of schemes like Glastir. The Corn Poppy is fighting back against the herbicides. Recently it has been found that poppies have developed resistance to some weed-killers.
