Mary Anne Hughes Sampler Aug. 13, 1828.JPG
Description
Needlepoint sampler done by Mary Anne Hughes who was born 1818. Age 10 when she did the sampler dated August 13, 1828. Wording on the sampler "Menai Bridge Near Bangor Caernarvonshire. In Length 204 yards In Height 102 yards from the water. Mary Anne Hughes Her Work Aged 10 August 13th., 1828". It has letters C and A at the upper left and right. They may stand for Caernarvonshire and Anglesey as the Menai Bridge is between the Isle of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. The sampler also has a picture of a Welsh harp with the letters G and B which I imagine stand for Great Britain. The picture of the flag on the right is probably the English flag, as at that time, Wales did not have their own flag. A photo was sent to St. Fagan's Museum in Cardiff where the former keeper of textiles said it was a very nice piece and is similar to some straw work pictures of the same view and date in the Museum's collection.
