Description
This eminent civil engineer was born June 7th 1761 at Preston, Kirk in East Lothian, Scotland. His principal works are the Break-water at Plymouth, Ramsgate Harbour, the London Docks, the Bell-Rock Light House at the mouth of the Tay and Waterloo and Southwark bridges. This distinguished and highly useful ornament of society died at his house in Stamford Street, Blackfriars on Thursday Oct 4th 1821 and his reamins were deposited in St. Pauls Cathedral.
