Sign board for E. J. Morgan, boot maker, bearing the coat of arms of the Cordwainers' Guild, c. 1800

Description

This board bears a coat of arms which appears to be based on that of the Cordwainers' Guild, whose coat of arms can be seen on the entrance to their chapel in Brecon Cathederal. The Latin motto 'Vincit Omnia Veritas' translates as 'truth conquers all'. The supporters are probably portraits and each holds an item of footwear. Edwin J. Morgan was a bootmaker in Market Street, Hay-on-Wye, in the second half of the nineteenth century. Earlier names have been painted over.
