Calvinistic Methodist preacher & hymn-writer. Born at Llanfihangel Abercowin, near St. Clears, Carmarthenshire, younger brother of Rev. Thomas Charles. Assistant to rope maker in Carmarthen 1775-1780 in Bristol 1780-83. In business at Carmarthen 1783-1834. Deacon in the Methodist Church (from 1788 & began to preach circa 1805, ordained 1811; preached in English & Welsh.
