Description

Excavation carried out with Valleys Kids, as part of the Unloved Heritage? programme. No.27 Caroline St was partly excavated, largely confirming the oral history of one of the previous occupants (see in one of the pictures). The house was stone-built, with brick dividing walls. Traces of blue-painted plaster give hints of the final phase of décor. Caroline St was demolished following the closure of Fernhill Colliery, and the site is overlain by a layer of coal dust and spoil. Maps and plans held at Glamorgan Archives give further information about the colliery housing.
