About
Fifty years ago in late 1972, Idi Amin expelled 70,000 Asian people from Uganda. 28,200 came to Britain and around 1,500 of these were accommodated for up to six months in the old army base at Tonfannau near Tywyn. The ‘British Ugandan Asians at 50’ oral history project, funded by the National Lottery, has interviewed local people who volunteered to help the Ugandan Asians, together with some former residents of the camp. They describe the “warm Welsh welcome” given to the desperate expellees, and the impact the episode had on the town. Further details on this extraordinary episode in the modern history of Meirionydd, and on the wider BUA50 project, can be seen at https://bua50.org
