About
Dan Douglas Davies was born 19/06/1918. He studied at College of the Pharmaceutical Society (University of London) and qualified as a pharmacist in June 1941 and as a radiographer in June 1942 before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps and serving in India
Whilst serving in India, Davies bought his first camera for 5 Rupees and documented various scenes of daily Indian life alongside photographs of his military colleagues. Due to the unavailability of camera film and developing equipment i India, Davies used his skill as a radiographer to take and develop the photographs which appear in his striking photographic album of the time.
After his military discharge in 1946, Davies returned to Llandybie in Carmarthenshire where he established his own pharmaceutical practice in the village. In addition to catering to the community’s medical needs, Davies used his earlier experiences of photography to open a photographic studio in the pharmacy and became an established local photographer for many years.
In addition to formal studio photographs, Davies experimented with artistic photographic techniques to create works which were widely exhibited around the UK and even in Melbourne, Australia (1959). His work won many photographic competitions in the National Eisteddfod and were also exhibited in an Italian Photographic Magazine.
He continued to enjoy photography until his death in 1992.
