About
Disability Can Do is a charity based in Pontllanfraith that works with disabled people to promote and encourage inclusion, independence, and choice. In 2018 we embarked on, The Canari Project, a Heritage Lottery funded project looking at the history of disability in the local mining industries from 1850 to the present day. The Canari Project uses the insight of volunteers and participants own experiences of disability to see how the challenges of disability have shaped and changed our communities. Participants and volunteers from the Caerphilly Borough have researched documents held in both public and personal archives and collected personal stories and experiences of people working in industries in the South Wales region, particularly focussing on coal mining. This has resulted in a series of oral history interviews conducted by volunteers. The interviews offered insights into the following areas:
How disabled people were treated within society and at work
What equipment and aids were available to them
What work was available to them and whether their pay was the same
How disabilities were caused as a result of industrial activities and whether people were compensated in such circumstances
Whether workplace health and safety changed as a result of injuries and disability
