Alan Speake

This guest remembers a huge street party to celebrate the Coronation and says that people felt very British during the 1950s. By the time of the Investiture things had changed - he remembers being part of the workforce in Caernarfon on the day and experiencing the opposition to the occasion. He feels guilt when he remembers Aberfan - feeling that the community and the government could have done so much more to help. And as for the Miners' Strike he speaks of the violence, Scargill and Thatcher's roles in the battle and the lessening of respect for the NUM. He talks about how he changed his opinion on Devolution between 79 and 97 after learning more about Wales' history and that, mostly, from television. He speaks of the importance of S4C to people who are not fully fluent Welsh speakers.
