Dafydd Frankl Jones

The interviewee remembers watching football in neighbours' houses as many were without television during his childhood. He does not remember much of the Tryweryn story on television as many were still without television and there was very little Welsh broadcasting at that time. The broadcasting from Aberfan was a way of drawing attention to parts of Wales and make people think of the effects of industry on the country. He did not take much notice of the Investiture himself. He feels that the protests did not receive much attention on television but again perhaps the lack of Welsh broadcasting was responsible for this. He attended rugby matches during the 70s. Watching on television can be lonely on your own, there would be rituals whilst watching a match in the stadium - meeting up before and after to discuss. The interviewee remembers debates on television before the 1979 Referendum and being conscious of the influence of strong personalities like Neil Kinnock. He thinks that the death of Diana had an effect on the 97 Referendum and that royal rituals bring out the Britishness in people. The tension was too great to stay up to see the results - there was uncertainty. The next morning was very memorable. The launch of S4C was one of the great events, no similar channel in England and had an impact on Welshness. He says many in Wrexham choose to receive a signal from the Midlands. He felt that the miners were being portrayed as a group who were trying to defend their own benefits over those of the country generally.
