This is an interesting and revelatory photograph. Top centre is a short moving target rail. This target rail has a earthen dugout on the south-eastern end (left) of the rail. From discussion with a former soldier who worked on the range in WWII, it is likely that the earthen bank protected a vehicle whose rear axle, propped up off the ground, would have been used as a makeshift winch to haul a moving target along the rails running North-West from the dugout. The photograph also shows three other dugout pits for operation of "pop-up" targets. These pits are at appx. 2, 3 and 4 o'clock from the moving target dugout. These features probably date from 1941.
