Description
The various University of Wales colleges formed football clubs towards the end of the nineteenth century. The most successful teams were at Bangor and Aberystwyth and there were many fiercely competitive matches between the two colleges. Here is a photograph of Aberystwyth's team which shows their captain, Leigh Richmond Roose, a talented goalkeeper who later played for some of the most successful English clubs at the time, including Everton and Aston Villa. He also represented his country and won 24 caps for Wales.
