Honey Fungus by Brenda Caldicott

Description

Scientific Name:Armillaria mellea
Fungi facts:Honey fungus is a devastating parasite of both deciduous and conifer trees. By the time fruit bodies are evident the tree is doomed. The fungus produces ‘mycelial threads’ which are exactly like black bootlaces by which the fungus spreads underground from tree to tree. The fungus contains a chemical which glows in the dark and there are reports that miners in the old days saw ‘glowing pit props’ underground.
