Scientific Name:Rhizopus nigricans
Fungi facts:This species is commonly known as the Bread mould fungus which is found on spoiled food such as bread, soft fruit and has even been isolated from children’s sandwich boxes! The fungus utilises the simple sugars in these substrates as their food source. The spores however contain allergenic proteins with 31 distinct allergens. It is also used medicinally and some birth control pills contain chemicals produced by the fungus.
