Description

Scientific Name:Puccinia graminis
Fungi facts:Black Stem rust is a devastating fungal disease of cereal crops throughout the main Wheat growing areas of the world. Crop losses can range from 10 % to over 50% but with the advent of the breeding of resistant strains of wheat since the last century we have suffered less from these epidemics during the last 50 years. The cost of reduction in grain yield, protection through fungicide spraying and plant breeding plus monitoring to society is $100 billion per annum.
