Scientific Name:Claviceps purpurea Fungi facts:The name ergot is applied to a range of similar parasitic fungi which infect the flowering heads of grasses and cereals. Contaminated grain made into flour for the manufacture of bread has in the past caused social disasters. The fungus contains extremely toxic alkaloids and which can cause hallucinations, 'irrational behaviour', convulsions and even death.
