King Alfred's Cakes by Kath Elvy

Description

Scientific Name:Daldinia concentrica
Fungi facts:This fungus is frequently found on ash. Its common name derives from folk-lore where it is supposed that Alfred whilst tending the cakes of a peasant who gave him shelter allowed them to burn. Individual fruit bodies grow over several seasons and if cut open these seasonal growths appear as concentric rings. The spores are shot out from flask shaped structures on the surface.
