Booklet for the opening dinner of Penylan House, a Jewish Home for the Aged, Cardiff, 23 April 1972

Description

A booklet for the opening dinner of Penylan House, the new Jewish Home for the Aged in South Wales, Monmouthshire and West of England.

The cover contains an illustration of the new home as well as the date and time of the dinner, which was to be held at Sherman Memorial Hall, Ty Gwyn Road, Cardiff. The name of the chairman, J. Bernstein is featured at the bottom of the cover. The second page is the menu and the third page is the toast list, which details the honoured guest, The Very Rev. Dr Immanuel Jakobovits, Chief Rabbi. Jakobovits later became the first rabbi to ever sit in the House of Lords (he took his seat in 1988) and was known for being outspoken, especially about politics and was given a knighthood by Margaret Thatcher. Another guest listed was Cecil Rapport, who was a Chairman for the Cardiff and District Jewish Blind Aid Society. His father, Maurice A. Rapport had been the first opener of the home and Cecil H. Rapport later donated the "Rapport Ward" to the home. Also listed was Harry Poloway, Esq. who had been a Warrant Officer in the Second World War and was well-known, especially in the Newport area, being the official toastmaster at many events involving the Royal Family. On the back of the booklet is a list of the board of management.

Pencare (formerly known as 'The Trustees of Penylan House') is a charity, which offers care for elderly people of the Jewish faith and is currently based in Cardiff, although the catchment area for the home covers South Wales and the West of England. Pencare has been working with Linc Cymru to redevelop their care home, Penylan House, to ensure high quality care to Cardiff's elderly Jewish community and extending the care to elderly people not of the Jewish faith.
