'Nelson's glass eye', a contemporary fake [image 1 of 2]

Description

Nelson lost the sight of his right eye at the seige of Calvi in 1794. In a letter to his wife he wrote: "The blemish is nothing; not to be percieved unless told." Blindness was caused by detachment of the retina, and there was never any question of the replacement of the eyeball.

This glass eye entered Lady Llangattock's collection of Nelson memorabilia as a known fake.
