This picture shows the charging door of one of the five scrap remelting furnaces at Rheola. A 14t oil fired reverbatory furnace would melt down a charge of metal which was transferred by open side launders to a 11t holding furnace at the back which shared one wall with the melting unit. Here we can see the twin oil fired burners producing the "sparks" visible and it is probable that this was taken shortly after lighting the furnace. A reverbatory furnace is designed to heat the roof area which then radiates the heat back to melt the aluminium scrap charge.
