Description
This is the earliest photograph from May Hewlett's collection. It shows her Aunt Cath (1870-1952)(second left) as a young girl. She was always called Aunt Cath, but whether she was Catherine, Cathryn or Catrin we're not sure (so much was Anglicised during this time). The lady on the right holding the baby is Catherine's Mother Anne Rhys (1848-1900) from Briton Ferry. The baby & small boy will be her brothers (either Arthur, Rees, Thomas or William). Anne married Thomas James (1844-1925) of Aberbeeg and together they had 11 children. Thomas was working as a Tin Plate Roller in 1891, and the family lived at 95 Neath Road, Briton Ferry. We have always assumed the old couple are Anne's parents.
