Welsh international football cap, awarded to Bryn Jones, 1934-35
Description
Born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1912, Brynmor Jones began his career as a miner. However, his skills as an inside forward on the football pitch soon attracted the attention of clubs. He signed for Glenavon in the Irish league but returned to Wales in 1933 to play for Aberaman. Before the end of the year, he was signed by Wolverhampton Wanderers for the sum of £1,500. In 1938, he moved to Arsenal for a record-breaking fee of £14,000.
Jones won 17 caps for Wales in the 1930s and 1940s, and he played in the team that defeated the English 2-1 in 1936.
He eventually retired from football after he was struck on the head by a Brazilian policeman on Arsenal's tour of Brazil in 1949. He also had a brief career as the coach of Norwich City between 1949 and 1951.
Bryn Jones died at the age of 73 in October 1985.
