Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints experienced considerable success in the Merthyr Tydfil area in the mid-19th century. When several congregations in a Conference [District] met together it was necessary to hire larger premises than typically used for regular Sunday worship. The Temperance Hall in John Street, Merthyr Tydfil, was one such venue.
