Miners

‘Miners Returning Home’ by John Elwyn, is such a dark painting. I fancied a challenge, as I usually paint bright colourful paintings, to create the wet dark atmosphere of the miners with translucent watercolour. It took a lot of paint to mix up the darks which I glazed over the background colours in the landscape. A bit like the coal dust and grime covering what had been a green valley. Being from the North East, where there was similar mining and heavy industry, this miners painting really resonated with me.
