Interview with Anil Pabari. Welsh Asian Heritage Project

Description

Interview with Anil Pabari, conducted as part of the Welsh Asian Heritage Project by Chandrika Joshi on the 28th of March 2024. In this interview Anil Pabari reflects on his experiences as a child expelled from Uganda in 1972. He recalls a happy, carefree childhood in Soroti, Uganda, but remembers the fear and confusion during the expulsion, particularly the journey from Soroti to Kampala amid army checkpoints. After arriving in the UK, his family stayed in camps in Honiton, Devon, and North Wales, where the cold and challenging living conditions were a stark contrast to Uganda. Anil describes the difficulties of adapting to life in the UK but also the support they received, particularly from a social worker named Miss Harding, who helped the family settle and even advocated for his brother's education. Despite the hardship, Anil thrived academically, attending grammar school and eventually becoming head boy. He went on to study computing at university. Anil also speaks about the hard work and unity that helped his family build a business from nothing after arriving in the UK. Later, he was forced to leave his professional career due to epilepsy, but his family and the shop they ran provided vital support. He shares stories of his close-knit family, his pride in his two daughters, and the resilience instilled in him by his parents’ dedication and hard work.
