Interview with Farida Pabani-Salmon by Farah Allibhai
Description
Farida Pabani-Salmon was born in Paranga, Uganda in 1964. She was one of seven siblings who had to flee Uganda as a child during the expulsion of Asians in the 1970s. Farida's family had a long history in East Africa, with her grandfather building up a successful business selling cotton and operating shops. However, when Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of Asians, Farida's family had to quickly leave Uganda and resettle in the UK. The transition to life in Wales was difficult for the family, with Farida facing racism and bullying in school that led her to skip classes at times. However, Farida's mother was a strong pillar of support, and Farida developed a resilient work ethic, taking on various jobs from a young age. Now in her 60s, Farida has lived most of her life in Wales, building a career in catering. She recently became widowed, but continues to emphasize the importance of kindness, respect, and family in navigating life's challenges.
