Interview with Prakash Thaker

Description

The interview with Prakash Thakar recounts his family's history and his own experiences growing up in Uganda. His grandfather immigrated to Uganda from India in 1902, seeking better opportunities amidst poverty. Prakash recalls a challenging childhood, where his family operated a shop and later a shirt factory, struggling yet content with life. At around age 12, concerns about political instability led Prakash's family to send him to India for education. He returned to Uganda at 16 to help support his family. However, escalating tensions during Idi Amin's regime resulted in fears for their safety, prompting him to leave Uganda in 1972. After a close call with the military, he sought refugee status and eventually moved to Italy while awaiting asylum. While in Italy, Prakash navigated life in a refugee camp and eventually found work, leading him to New Zealand, where he settled and became part of a small Ugandan community. He built a life with various jobs and concluded the interview by discussing the strained historical relationships among Indians, Africans, and white people during his time in Uganda, contrasting it with the more integrated relationships he observed in the UK.
