3. Resettlement. From Migration to Resilience

Description

Exhibition panel from the ‘From Migration to Resilience: The Welsh Ugandan Asian Story’ exhibition, displayed at the Senedd Oriel, Cardiff between 16 November – 19 December 2024.

Resettlement brought new opportunities but also major challenges. While housing was provided, many families struggled to find stability. Adults accepted any available work—factories, farms, kitchens, or garages—before gradually establishing businesses such as shops and restaurants. Children’s schooling was often harsh, with racism, bullying, and assumptions about language ability undermining their education. Despite these obstacles, Ugandan Asians gradually carved out livelihoods, supported each other, and began achieving personal and professional successes beyond what many had imagined when first arriving in Wales.
