Exhibition panels: From Migration to Resilience: The Welsh Ugandan Asian Story
The exhibition From Migration to Resilience: The Welsh Ugandan Asian Story traces the journey of Ugandan Asians from expulsion to rebuilding lives in Wales. It begins with their forced removal under Idi Amin in the 1970s, when thousands lost homes and businesses and many resettled in the UK. In north Wales, refugees at Tonfanau camp endured harsh conditions but sustained community through shared traditions and support networks. Resettlement brought work and education challenges, often compounded by racism, yet families gradually built businesses and achieved stability. Faith and spirituality provided comfort, with new places of worship becoming community hubs. Wales’s landscapes offered both solace and continuity, blending memory, spirituality, and belonging. Ultimately, the panels highlight resilience—especially of women—in overcoming trauma, preserving culture, and forging new identities in their adopted homeland.
The exhibition displayed at the Senedd Oriel, Cardiff between 16 November – 19 December 2024.
