4. Spirituality. From Migration to Resilience

Description

Exhibition panel from the ‘From Migration to Resilience: The Welsh Ugandan Asian Story’ exhibition, displayed at the Senedd Oriel, Cardiff between 16 November – 19 December 2024.

Faith and spirituality played a crucial role in coping with the trauma of expulsion and resettlement. Families pooled resources to establish places of worship across Wales: the Ismaili Jama’at Khana in private homes, Hindu worship at The Parade leading to a temple and cultural centre, Sikh gurdwaras, and early mosques. These institutions provided spiritual comfort and became centres of community resilience, ensuring traditions survived in a new land. From small gatherings in living rooms to major religious and cultural centres, the growth of multi-faith spaces in Wales reflects the broader story of resilience, adaptation, and integration.
