5. Landscape. From Migration to Resilience

Description

Exhibition panel from the ‘From Migration to Resilience: The Welsh Ugandan Asian Story’ exhibition, displayed at the Senedd Oriel, Cardiff between 16 November – 19 December 2024.

Memories of Uganda’s landscapes—its mountains, rivers, and wildlife—remained vivid for many. Arriving in Wales, some felt a spiritual connection to its valleys and hills, despite the cooler climate. Local hospitality softened the transition, providing comfort and welcome. Landscapes also became interwoven with religious practice: Skanda Vale arose from a deep spiritual connection to the natural world, while annual Khalsa Aid treks up Snowdon symbolise Sikh ties with Wales. The establishment of cremation and ash-scattering rituals in Cardiff further reflects how land and spirituality remained closely bound for migrant communities.
