The Cuban Missile Crisis ...Late observations by RAF Technician, Dennis Thomas

Description

This clip is an extract from a face-to-camera interview with RAF Technician veteran, Dennis Thomas (1931-2016) Recorded in Buckley (Flintshire) in 2011 by community volunteer historian, John Butler. In 2016 Buckley character Dennis Thomas, a well-respected veteran military technician and a much-in-demand after-dinner raconteur, sadly passed-away. Anyone who heard Dennis recount something of his career experiences to an audience would have been treated to a fascinating insight on life and events in the Royal Air Force of the immediate post-war years. All presented with a confidence and inimitable ease -seldom encountered outside professional speaking circles. During a remarkable engineering career beginning at RAF Sealand, North Wales, Dennis had often witnessed first-hand, the advent and implimentation of much cutting-edge military technology. Sometimes whilst close to the action during events of extraordinary international significance. In 2011, after hearing Dennis's talk to the Deeside Forty-One club, it was my priviledge to be invited to interview him at his Buckley home. Recently, whilst tidying-up my media archives and seeking new footage for my own heritage talks, I came across a, previously unpublished, tail-end of-my 2011 session. This production is intended for deposit with our National Media Archive, Aberystwyth, Wales, UK. This intriguing aspect of, "The Cuban Missile Crisis", is part of a compilation of Dennis Thomas life stories now preserved for the enlightenment of future generations. John Butler September 2025 References:http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/witness/october/28/newsid_3201000/32… Note:The original, HD digital media of this interview was plagued with sound problems! One of the two microphones intended to flawlessy capture every nuance of my subject's speech decided to die towards the end of the session -and the one that continued working seemed more focussed on the scuffles and tweets which periodically emanated from the family caged canary resident in the adjoining room! Fortunately, after deploying 2025 AI software -and with the encouragement of Kate at www.aiarty.com/ acceptable audio quality was restored. You be the judge! JB
