Medal of Bombardier Moses Jenkins, RFA
Description
Moses Jenkins was born 11 October 1879 in Gelligaled in the Rhondda valley to Thomas and Sarah Jenkins. He was the second son in the family and like his father he went to the coal mines when he was old enough. He married Bronwen Evans in 1901 and they began their lives together in Tylorstown in the Rhondda before moving to Mountain Ash as their family grew. Moses continued to work in the mines but also became well known for his fine singing voice.
After the war began Moses enlisted for military service and by 1915 was a Bombardier in the 121st brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. He was serving in France in 1917 and on 7 June he died of wounds received from a shell attack. He was survived by his wife and five children ages 4 to 15 and is buried in the Mendinghem War Cemetery near Proven, Belgium. This is the 1914-15 Star medal his family received for his service.
