Description

Photograph of Private George Jenkins with his wife Elizabeth and two (Ivor and Phyllis) of his six children. He was born in 1877 and enlisted in the army on 7 October 1914, serving with the 1/3 Battalion of the Royal Monmouthshire Regiment. He was involved in the mining of Hill 60 on the Ypres Salient in early 1915. (His service with the 171st Tunnelling Company is mentioned in the book 'With Rifle and Pick'). He was discharged from the army on 4 August 1917 due to ill health. He died in 1927 and is buried in a hill top cemetery overlooking the town of Cwm in the Ebbw valley.
