Turnpike Roads of South-West Wales · Milestones, Toll Gates and Lost Infrastructure 1700–1844

Description

This map presents the complete digital translation of the 2014 Dyfed Archaeological Trust Interim Report on Turnpike and Pre-Turnpike Roads, a Scheduling Enhancement Project commissioned by Cadw. It documents 489 verified sites across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, comprising 400 milestones, 20 mileposts, 59 toll gates, 8 toll houses, 1 toll bridge and 1 additional toll site.

The sites span the turnpike road network of south-west Wales from the late 17th century through to the dissolution of the Turnpike Trusts following the Rebecca Riots and the South Wales Turnpike Act of 1844. Routes documented include the Carmarthen to Lampeter, Carmarthen to Llanelli, Kidwelly to Carmarthen, Llandovery, Aberystwyth, Cardigan to Lampeter, Narberth to Tenby, Fishguard, and Whitland Trust roads, among others.

All GPS coordinates have been precision-corrected from the original OS National Grid References using the OSGB datum transformation. Significant errors were identified in the majority of the original GPS figures in the source report; every coordinate on this map is derived from the verified NGR.

The map is divided into separate layers by site type. Each pin carries the site's Primary Record Number (PRN), community, county, corrected GPS coordinates, OS National Grid Reference, turnpike route, and the original Dyfed Archaeological Trust site description.
