Drawing by Falcon Hildred. Menai Bridge, 1981. Gouache and ink on paper. IGMT2011.788.2.
Description
Drawing by Falcon Hildred. Thomas Telford’s magnificent suspension bridge was built in the 1820s to carry the Holyhead Road over the Menai Strait in north Wales. This is not a romantic depiction emphasising the elegance of the structure but a roadway view showing the workaday reality of a bridge still carrying large vehicles and heavy traffic more than a century and a half after it was built.
