Drawing by Falcon Hildred. English Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Blaenau Ffestiniog, 1997. Pencil and watercolour on paper. FHA 01_117
Description
Drawing by Falcon Hildred. In Wales, Gothic chapel architecture is traditionally (though often wrongly) associated with English-speaking congregations in otherwise Welsh-speaking strongholds. The rule does hold true of the ‘Capel Saesneg’ (the ‘English Chapel’) in Blaenau Ffestiniog. The sum of a hundred intricate details, these sketches record the myriad of mouldings, castings, carvings and forgings chosen by the congregations. The whole effect recalls a nineteenth-century pattern book.
