George Scammell creating a meat tin, 1968
Description
In his workshop at Abergavenny, George Scammell made lunch boxes and drinks containers for local workers. He also made domestic items such as cake tins, milk cans, oil lamps and containers for storing oil.
By the time he retired in May 1969, he was the last working tinsmith in Monmouthshire. The contents of his workshop at Hatersleigh Place, Union Road, were acquired by the Welsh Folk Museum at St Fagans (now St Fagans National History Museum).
The meat tin depicted in this photograph is one of the items acquired by the Museum.
