PARCIAU, MARIANGLAS

Description

Black and white print of Parciau, Marianglas, copied from an original postcard in the possession of Thomas Lloyd.

The mansion depicted on early editions of the Ordnance Survey County series (Anglesey VII.16 1889, 1900, 1921) is now gone. An early postcard shows what appears to be a fairly modern three storey house. This had walls of rusticated dressed stone and prominent projecting eaves courses. It had a hipped roof with a multitude of tall chimney stacks. The treatment of small projecting bays on the south front hints at a Celtic revival influence.

Several anciliary buildings remain, including a service wing and what might be a coachhouse or stables. The house and its grounds were set within a very large park at least 2km across. The home farm, Parciau Farm, lies to the north. The early seventeenth century dovecote in the park area might be associated with an earlier house on the same site.

I worked at Parciau in 1963, as a nanny for the two girls Emma and Antonia , at that time we lived in the bungalow on the side , it was probebly converted from the old stables , I remember their grandmother very well who still lived in the big house , lovely lady . I was quite sad to read that the mansion no longer stood .

My Grandfather lived in Home farm and my mother was born here. We have some photographs of the farm and my grandfather (Evan Roberts) tending the cattle and working with shire horses in the fields. My grandparents then lived in ‘the bungalow ‘ .....beautiful place
