Salem 13th Annual Gathering, Pittsburgh, 1933 [article]

Description

SALEM REUNION AGAIN PROVES GREAT SUCCESS Large Crowd and Excellent Program Mark 13th Annual Gathering Near Ebensburg; Pittsburgh Pastor Preaches at Morning Service With attendant perfect weather, the 13th annual reunion of the Salem Homecoming association of North Ebensburg was held yesterday all day at the little white chapel just off the Colver road, with hundreds of former parishioners of the Welsh C. M. church enjoying the feast of song and a fine sermon preached by a former pastor of the church.
The morning service started at 10:45 o'clock and was featured by an inspiring sermon by the Rev. William Henry Williams, now pastor of the Oakland Welsh Presbyterian church of Pittsburgh. The Rev. Williams was pastor of the Salem and Ebensburg congregations from June 1, 1899, to December 31, 1903, serving these churches as his first charges just after his graduation from Princeton Seminary in 1898.
In the afternoon two services of song were held, one in the little church and the other in the large grove. Robert H. Owens, of Johnstown, who has had charge of the Salem musical features ever since the homecoming association was organized 13 years ago, was again leading and had a host of soloists and instrumentalists on hand to sing and play for the large crowd.
The executive committee of the Salem reunion enthusiasts, in a special meeting yesterday afternoon, decided on the first Sunday in August, as the permanent date for their future gatherings. This action was taken by the officers in order that there might be no confusion of dates in arranging other church reunions in the Ebensburg area.
Among the enthusiastic supporters of the Salem annual reunion who have passed away during the year were the following: David E. Jones, Richard D. Jones, Mrs. Margaret Hughes, and Aaron Davis, all of Johnstown.
Guests and members of the homecoming association who attended yesterday yesterday reported a very enjoyable reunion. All surrounding counties and sections were represented and the following came from distant points: Mrs. E. Messer, son, John Edward, jr., and grandson of Cincinnati: Mrs. Margaret Renner and grandson, Larimer Stillwagon, jr., and daughter, Mrs. Cora Buttermore, of Connellsville; Albert Lewis, of Pittsburgh; Mr. and Mrs. Dean Rowland, of Elizabeth, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. John A. Northwood and daughter, of Sparrows Point, Md.; John L. Edwards, formerly of Belsano, now of the State of South Carolina; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Jose of Lakewood, O.; and Mrs. Sam S. (?) gram, of Hollywood, Cal.
