Home Guard bludgeon, 1940-45

Description

In 1940 with the threat of German invasion, the 'Local Defence Volunteers', later known as the 'Home Guard', were formed. There were not enough guns or other arms to replace all those lost in France. Therefore, many men resorted to making their own, such as this bludgeon which has been studded with iron pieces and weighted down with lead.
