Description
A hand drawn map showing the stall layout for the Charles Street Carnival in Cardiff, July 1987. The map shows Charles Street from Marks & Spencer and Littlewoods (on Queens Street) down to the junction with Bridge Street at the south end. Marked on the map are premises that feature in the Carnival, and sites where stalls can be placed. In addition to St David's Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Ebenezer Chapel, buildings identified include:
· Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers at No. 42
· Friends Meeting House and garden, which was used for children’s entertainment
· Charles Street Arts Foundation's offices, on 1st Floor of No. 54
· Montmorence Club at No. 47
· Oriel Gallery and Bookshop at No. 53. This was the Welsh Arts Council's Window on the Arts in Wales, a shop and gallery, managed by Peter Finch [www.peterfinch.co.uk/oriel.htm, accessed 6/2/17]
· City Centre Youth Project at No. 58
In June 1977, Cardiff Community Concern started the Charles Street Carnival as a community groups' alternative celebration of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. This became an annual event and grew into a separate organisation, Charles Street Arts Foundation. The Foundation came to employ artists and staff but was founded and run by volunteers. Cardiff Community Concern, also founded and run by volunteers, was an alternative advice and information centre for young people, based in 58 Charles Street.
