Description
The silver coated metal badge with pin fastening has red, enamelled inscription WVS CIVIL DEFENCE surmounted by crown. It is 3 cm long and 2 cm wide and it was made in Birmingham, England. The badge belonged to Mrs Emily Winifred Pride Hillier during her service for WVS (Women’s Voluntary Services) after 1939.
WVS, Women’s Voluntary Services, currently known as Royal Voluntary Service was founded in 1938 by Lady Stella Reading for Air Raid Precautions to help recruit women. They assisted civilians during and after air raids providing emergency rest centres, feeding, first aid, evacuation and billeting of children. By 1943 the organisation had over one million volunteers. In 2013 the charity, registered in 1992, changed its name to Royal Voluntary Service. Nowadays it offers practical help and support, especially for elderly people in their homes, neighbourhoods and hospitals.
