Welsh Costume: Jenny Jones, Spooner, 1850s, 1860s
Description
Title: ‘JENNY JONES / London. Published by W. Spooner, 377, Strand. Printed by W Kohler, 22 Denmark St. Soho
I’ve seen all the lands that are famous in story,
And many fair damsels to gain me have strove
But I said in my heart I do love that Llangollen
And sweet Jenny Jones too, in truth do I love.’
Description: Head and chest of girl with tall hat, goffered cap tied with a broad blue bow; ‘tartan’ bedgown, shawl partially folded over shoulder. She is knitting and has a milk can on right
Note: It is very unusual for a Welsh woman’s hair to show - it is normally completely covered by the cap. There are some suggestions that the cap was always worn after marriage but in this case, Jenny was still Jones and had not yet taken her lover’s name – Morgan.
