View of Ferryside by an unknown artist, c. 1840

Description

This watercolour shows a view of the village of Ferryside, looking towards the mouth of the river Tywi. The village of Llansteffan may be seen in the distance, on the opposite bank of the estuary. By 1852, this view had been dramatically altered with the building of the South Wales Railway, which reached Carmarthen in September 1852. The railway line, which is still in existence today, effectively cut off the village of Ferryside from the sea as if it is built on an embankment, which follow the contours of the shore at this point. Dimensions: 22.4cm x 32.5cm.
