John Biggs Military Musician 1959 to 1965
This is a collection of items relating to Peter "John" Biggs, who was a Bandsman in the 3rd Carabineers Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards band, between 1959 to 1965. John joined the British Army as a Musician in 1959 and served for six years. The regiment was based at Detmold in then West Germany for the majority of his service. The collection contains a short film of an interview with John, when he was 87 years of age, along with a narrative, which offers some background to his military career, and various photographs from his collection. The film relies heavily on John's memory of events that occurred sixty five years previously. The viewer will hear how proud John was of the band and it's performances, and the wider community of Musicians in the British military at the time. John was the winner of the prestigious Cassel prize, being awarded the silver medal, in November 1961. The winner of the award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, London, can be rightly proud of the achievement as the silver medal attracts a high degree of respect.
