Part of the Zulu War in South Africa, the Battle of Rorke's Drift was fought on 22 January 1879. 139 British troops, mainly Welshmen, were pitted against about 4,500 Zulus. 17 British troops were killed and 10 wounded, about 500 Zulu warriors perished.
